How the District Courts are organised.

Section 93 of the Courts Act establishes a District Court in every district. Each is a court of record with limited jurisdiction: in civil matters, claims where the sum or matter in dispute does not exceed Rs 250,000, plus small claims up to Rs 100,000 that litigants may lodge themselves; in criminal matters, most offences, with sentencing limited to five years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 100,000. Appeals go to the Supreme Court and must be lodged within 21 days. Source: the Supreme Court of Mauritius on the District Court.

The District Courts are those of Port-Louis, Pamplemousses, Rivière du Rempart (Mapou), Flacq, Grand-Port (Mahébourg), Savanne (Souillac), Black River (Bambous), Lower Plaines Wilhems (Rose-Hill), Upper Plaines Wilhems (Curepipe) and Moka. Alongside them sit the Intermediate Court, the Industrial Court, the Children's Court and the Supreme Court, which sits in Port-Louis.

Towns and districts.

• Port-Louis — the capital, where the chambers is and where the Supreme Court sits.
• Curepipe — plateau town; the District Court of Upper Plaines Wilhems sits here.
• Quatre Bornes — central Plaines Wilhems; commercial and residential work.
• Vacoas-Phoenix — land, title and employment matters across the largest plateau town.
• Beau Bassin-Rose Hill — the District Court of Lower Plaines Wilhems sits at Rose-Hill.
• Moka — the central district, served by the District Court of Moka.
• Grand Baie — north coast; resident and non-citizen property and family work.
• Flacq — the eastern district, served by the District Court of Flacq.
• Mahébourg — the District Court of Grand-Port sits here.
• Pamplemousses — the district north of the capital.
• Rivière du Rempart — north-east; its District Court sits at Mapou.
• Tamarin & Black River — the west coast; the District Court of Black River sits at Bambous.
