Mauritius spouse and dependent permit documents

Mauritius spouse and dependent permit documents establish two things: the sponsor's qualifying status and the family relationship relied upon. The exact file depends on whether the sponsor is a Mauritian citizen, an Occupation Permit holder, a retired resident or another eligible resident. The Passport and Immigration Office determines the immigration application under the Immigration Act 2022.

The sponsor's status determines the dependent application

Do not begin with a generic “family visa” list. A non-citizen civilly married to a Mauritian citizen follows the statutory spouse route. The dependant of an Occupation Permit or retired Residence Permit holder relies on the principal holder's permit, while a property-based resident may need the scheme approval.

Copy the sponsor's passport and current permit, where applicable. Add the approval letter or digital permit record that identifies the category and validity. If renewal is pending, include the acknowledgement but do not describe it as a new permit unless the authority has issued one.

A citizen sponsor should provide current proof of Mauritian citizenship and identity in the form requested by the Passport and Immigration Office. The spouse application page also calls for a written statement of support and may require information about any other nationality.

The legal guide to living in Mauritius sets the broader context, not the checklist for the particular family route.

Marriage and relationship documents to provide

A civil marriage certificate is the central relationship document for a spouse. Use the full certificate, not a ceremonial keepsake or a cropped registry image. The names, marriage date, place and issuing authority must remain visible.

Where either spouse was married before, the file may require the final divorce judgment or former spouse's death certificate. Pair it with the earlier marriage record if the document does not identify the relationship clearly. A foreign divorce raises both authenticity and legal-effect questions, which are explained in the guide to recognition of foreign divorces in Mauritius.

For a marriage celebrated abroad, the Immigration Act 2022 requires more than a bare assertion of marriage for the citizen-spouse route. The current law calls for the marriage certificate and evidence addressing whether the non-citizen was married to another person on that date. The permitted form of that evidence depends on where it is made.

An unmarried partnership should not be placed into the citizen-spouse route. Administrative material for certain permit-holder dependants has referred to a common-law partner and a certificate of cohabitation. Ask the Passport and Immigration Office whether that category remains available for the sponsor's permit and what proof it presently accepts.

Birth certificates and consent documents for children

Each child's full birth certificate should identify the child and recorded parents. Include the child's passport page and the principal holder's permit record. Where a stepchild or adopted child is included, add the adoption order or documents that establish the legal connection.

The current Immigration Act defines a dependent child by reference to age, financial dependence, marital status and gainful activity. The test is cumulative. A birth certificate proves parentage but does not, by itself, prove every part of dependency.

Consent becomes important when one biological parent is not travelling or applying. Published permit guidance has called for certified consent for a stepchild. A custody order, parental responsibility document or death certificate may instead explain why another signature is unavailable.

Read the order itself. A foreign custody document may regulate travel, residence or decision-making, and authentication does not expand what it says. The structure of the Mauritian courts is outlined in the courts of Mauritius guide.

Apostilles, translations and inconsistent civil-status records

An apostille authenticates the signature, capacity and seal on a public document for use in another Convention country. It does not prove that the relationship qualifies under Mauritius immigration law. Where the apostille system does not apply, the issuing country and receiving authority determine the required legalisation chain.

The Passport and Immigration Office says foreign birth and marriage records may need legalisation, authentication or an apostille, where applicable. Check this before posting an original. Mauritius designates the Apostille Section of the Defence and Home Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Office for Mauritian public documents.

Documents outside English or French generally require an official translation. Translate the full document, including stamps and marginal notes. Keep the source, authentication and translation together so the officer can see which page the translation belongs to.

In practice, family files stall over names more often than over the certificate's paper. A missing middle name, different transliteration or surname after marriage should be explained by civil-status records or an accepted one-and-the-same-person document. Do not edit the certificate to make it match the passport.

Financial, accommodation and passport evidence

The sponsor may be asked to show means of support. The required evidence depends on the route. A citizen-spouse file may use a recent Mauritian bank statement or payslip where requested, while a permit-holder family should connect support to the principal holder's status and resources.

Accommodation evidence should identify both the property and the arrangement. A lease in one spouse's name may need a supporting letter. If a family home was purchased by a non-citizen, the property approval remains a separate issue addressed in the Mauritius property-buying guide.

Every passport must be valid for its intended immigration use. Copy the entire biographical page and any page requested for the current entry status. A child's passport is not replaced by the parent's passport, even where the child is young.

Medical, character and photograph requirements vary with category and age. Use the live checklist. A report prepared for the principal holder should not be uploaded again under a dependant's name unless it concerns that person.

Filing a complete family application with immigration

Separate the file by applicant. Put the shared sponsor documents first, then a labelled set for the spouse and for each child. This makes it possible to identify a missing passport or consent without treating the family as one undivided applicant.

Check dates across the group. A dependant's permission generally cannot outlast the principal status on which it rests. A sponsor close to renewal may need to address the principal application before the family term is assessed.

Keep the submission receipt and the exact documents filed. If an officer requests further material, answer against the named applicant and reference number. Do not assume that a document supplied for one child has been placed on another child's record.

A child born while the family is in Mauritius needs a birth record, foreign travel document and immigration step of its own. The sequence is covered in the newborn immigration status guide. More connected material appears on the expat legal matters hub.

Frequently asked questions

Does my marriage certificate need an apostille for Mauritius immigration?

A foreign marriage certificate may need an apostille or another accepted authentication, depending on the issuing country and the route used. The apostille confirms the public document's origin; it does not decide immigration eligibility. This is general information; confirm the authentication required for your certificate with the Passport and Immigration Office.

Can my unmarried partner get a dependent permit in Mauritius?

Published administrative guidance has recognised a limited common-law partner category for some permit-holder dependants, but that is not the same route as a spouse of a Mauritian citizen. The available evidence and current definition must be checked for the sponsor's permit. This is general information; obtain advice before relying on cohabitation alone.

Do children need separate dependent permit applications?

Each non-citizen child needs immigration status recorded in that child's own right, even where the applications are lodged as a family. The birth, passport, dependency and any custody or consent material should be matched to that child. This is general information; the filing route depends on the parent's status and the child's circumstances.
